Vieux Lyon—the Old Town—is one of the best-preserved Renaissance districts in Europe.
In the past, the city was a hub for the silk trade and banking. Merchants from Italy, particularly Florence, came here. It was they who brought the architecture we admire today: courtyards, galleries, and spiral staircases.
Vieux Lyon is not just history, dates, and Renaissance townhouses—it is a living organism full of hidden passageways, known as traboules. In the past, they were an important part of the city’s infrastructure. They connected houses, warehouses, and the Saône River, enabling the rapid transport of goods. You enter through one door and exit a few streets away—without a map. During World War II, this same network of passageways was used by the resistance.
Vieux Lyon doesn’t reveal its secrets right away. Here, you have to look… and see. And listen…
