Fourvière is where it all began. It was here, in Roman times, that Lugdunum—the ancient capital of Gaul—was founded. To this day, you can see the Roman theater, which was discovered in the 20th century!

The basilica, which dominates the hill and which for many Lyonnais is like a lighthouse for sailors, was built in the 19th century as a symbol of gratitude—the residents believed that Mary had protected the city from epidemics and wars. The basilica’s architecture is extraordinary—a blend of styles, an abundance of gold and intricate details, and the church’s unique shape have earned it the nickname “the upside-down elephant.”

Fourvière is a hill full of green alleys, gardens, and viewing terraces. But beneath this hill lie mysterious underground passages from Roman times, full of ancient galleries and hidden nooks and crannies. Here, you’ll truly feel how history and legend still live beneath your feet.
